Grammar: Past Tenses


  Past Simple

    +        S V2/Ved

    -         S didn’t V1

?        Did S V1 ?

Short answers:  Yes, I did. / No, she didn’t.

Passive:  was/were V3

Time expressions: yesterday, then, when, How long ago, last night/week/month/year/Tuesday, the day before yesterday,  three days ago, in 1997, just now, during, the other day

Usage: 1) Для действия, кот. произошло в определенное время в прошлом. Время известно, обозначено или подразумевается;

2) для действий, кот. произошли одно за другим в прошлом (последовательность действий);

3) для прошлых привычек и состояний, кот. сейчас закончились. В этом случае также используем used to + V1 (раньше делали, теперь не делаем);

4) Conditional II (Unreal Present)

Условие нереально и относится к настоящему или будущему

If Past  Simple,   would V1.

     if-clause         main clause

If I was →→ If I were

5)В конструкциях:

Present Perfect since Past Simple.

It’s years since Past Simple.

The best movie Past Simple.

The first time Past Simple.

The last time Past Simple.

6) Если человек умер и действие не может повториться, употребляем Past Simple.


Past Continuous

+      S was/were Ving

-       S wasn’t/weren’t Ving

?      Was/Were S Ving ?

    Short answers:  Yes, I was. / No, they weren’t.

Passive:  was/were being V3

Time expressions: while, when, as, from 5 to 7 yesterday, all morning/evening/day/night, at 5 o’clock yesterday, that time last week, at that time

Usage: 1) Для действия, кот. было в процессе в определенное детальное время в прошлом. Мы не указываем, когда действие началось или закончилось;

2) Для действия, кот. было в процессе, когда другое действие прервало его. Past Continuous - длинное действие в процессе, а Past Simple - короткое действие, кот. прервало длинное;

3) Для двух и более одновременных действий в прошлом, особенно с while /as;

4) для описания атмосферы, природы, заднего фона во введении к рассказу;

Past Perfect

+        S had V3/Ved

-         S hadn’t V3/Ved

?        Had S V3/Ved ?

Short answers:  Yes, I had./No, I hadn’t.

Passive:  had been V3

Time expressions: before, after, already, just, for, since, till/until, when, by, by the time, never, by the age of 22, by 5 o’clock

Usage: 1) Для действия, кот. произошло до другого действия в прошлом или до определенного времени в прошлом;

2) Для действия, кот. закончилось  в прошлом и чей результат был виден в прошлом;

3) Past Perfect является прошедшим эквивалентом Present Perfect (Косвенная речь и согласование времен)

 4) Conditional III (Unreal Past)

Условие нереально и относится к прошлому

If Past Perfect, would have V3.

5) Инверсия – обратный порядок слов, как в вопросе. Используется для усиления значения

(Как только=едва ли)

Важно: после by, by the time, after, before, till/until употребляется Past Simple, так как они вводят придаточные предложения времени, Past Perfect или употребляется до или после придаточных предложений времени.

By the time they reached York, they had travelled for four hours already.

 


Past Perfect 

 Continuous


 +        S had been Ving

 -         S hadn’t been Ving

 ?         Had S been Ving ?

Short answers:  Yes, I had. / No, I hadn’t.

Passive:  X

Time expressions: for, since, how long,  before, all day/week/month/year

Usage: 1) Акцент на длительности действия, которое началось и закончилось в прошлом до другого действия в прошлом или до определенного времени в прошлом, особенно с since или for;

2) Для действия, которое длилось какое-то время в прошлом и чей результат был виден в прошлом и был связан с эмоциональным или физическим состоянием человека;

3) Past Perfect Continuous  является прошедшим эквивалентом Present Perfect Сontinuous (Косвенная речь и согласование времен)

Quick Summary Checklist

  • Past Simple handles the main events that happened one after another.
  • Past Continuous handles the background scenery or what was already in progress when the main events happened.
  • Past Perfect tells you which event happened first when you are looking back from a later point in your story.
  • Past Perfect Continuous emphasizes how long an action had been going on before something else stopped it or changed the situation.
