Exam Topics. Family

Family means a lot to everyone, because it gives you a sense of stability and tradition, a feeling of having support and understanding. You feel secure when there’s a family behind you. They are people you can trust and rely on, people who won’t let you down and who share your joys and sorrows. In happy families parents are frank and honest with their children, they treat their children with respect, as equals, without moralizing or bossing them, and children in their turn learn how to treat other people and how to form relationship with their peers.

Some of us are lucky to be born and raised in an extended family with lots of family members, close and distant relatives. Others come from nuclear families which are made up of parents and children. Basically, the size is not so important. It’s the relationship in the family that matters.

I really appreciate the relationship in my family. We are a family of four: my Dad, my Mum, my brother and I. Both of my parents are middle-aged. My father is in his late 40s. He’s tall, slim and has neither beard, nor a moustache. He works as an engineer. My mum is in her mid-40s. She’s of a medium height with long dark hair and blue eyes. She’s a teacher by profession. I have always looked up to my parents and treated them as my role-models. My dad is a very wise person and he taught me many life lessons. My Mum is the example of patience, kindness and tolerance towards other people.

I enjoy the honest and open atmosphere in my family. I like it when parents trust their children, give them enough freedom and respect them. I think these things make family relations warm and pleasant. There is no so-called “generation gap” in our family, though we may argue and disagree on certain issues. I can always bring my friend home and my parents are very positive about it, although they don’t always approve of our tastes, views and clothes.

We also share responsibilities and household chores. Everyone has their own duties which we have to fulfill and I consider it fair. Besides it makes us more disciplined and well-organized.

As I have already mentioned, I have one sibling, a brother. He’s 5 years younger than me and studies in primary school. Talking about the relationship with my brother, I won’t be honest enough if I say that it’s perfect. In general, we get on well most of the time but sometimes we don’t see eye to eye on certain things and it can lead to misunderstanding and even rows. But if my brother is in trouble, I will always support and stand for him. And he will do the same. So, all in all, our family is happy and tight-knit.

Nothing strengthens family ties and creates an atmosphere of friendship, happiness and love better than family traditions. Moreover, they set a good example of family relations for children and, of course, they leave memories for the rest of their lives. We have some family traditions. But to my mind we haven’t got anything special or original in our family. All our family traditions are connected with some holidays. Apart from national holidays there are family holidays like birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. Birthdays are always a happy event in our family. On these days we usually have a party. Mum is usually responsible for cooking and dad for entertainment. I guess, when people spend more time together they are closer to each other. One more family tradition is spending summer holidays together either at the seaside or in the country, which I enjoy very much.

I’d like to become more independent from my parents in future; nevertheless we’ll always be the best friends because my parents are the most important people in the world.

 Let’s talk about your family.

1. What kind of holidays do you like to celebrate in your family?

2. Do you have a family album? Why or why not?

3. What will you ask your British friend about his/her family?

4. What can you advise people who want to have a good relationship with their parents and grandparents?

5. What is more important: family or work? What do you think about it?

Let’s talk about your family.

1. What does your immediate family mean to you?

2. Are there any family traditions that you follow?

3. What questions will you ask a British teenager about their extended family?

4. Give a piece of advice on how to have a close and happy family?

5. They say that parents and children have difficulties understanding each other because of the generation gap. What do you think about it?

    1. As for my family we don't celebreate anything special. We celebrate mostly typical holidays like birthdays, new years and so on. But i still love the time when all of the family comes to celebrate and share their emotions. The atmosphere during this time is so wonderful.
    2. Yes, we have it. And to my mind the reason whe do we have it is so obvious. Album is a memory-keeper, where you can find all of the brightest memories and occasions.
    3. 1. Do you live in a nuclear or in extended family?
    2. Do you have any siblings?
    3. Do you have any family traditions?
    4. Would you like to stay in touch with them all the time?
    5. Do you get on well with your parents?
    4. Me advise is not to hide your feelings and thoughts. If you don't like something - than say it! Try to discuss, to come to the solution together. Don't live apart from them and show that you appreciate what they do for you and for the whole family. That's how people live in close-knit families. I thinks this is how it must be.
    5. I think family, because work is unstable and you may lose it even tomorrow. Today u have one job, tomorrow u'll have the other while family is one for the whole life. You can't choose and can't change your family. Family members are the closiest people to you and you can't change it. Comparing work and family, i'd like to say that work mostly gives only money while family provides person with a sense of stability and tradition, a feeling of having support and understanding. If I need to choose between family and work, i'll definetly choose family without any doubt

  3. 1). It is a tradition in my family to celebrate such holidays as New Year, Christmas, Women's Day, Easter. Usually we go to the village and all the holidays are ostentatious there. It is very important that all family members are there, although this does not always work out. 2). Yes, in our family, if there is not even one family album. They exist for memories. There are photos of my parents' youth, childhood photos of my sister and me. Also photos from all holidays. 3). Do you have a complete family or not? Is your family and you friendly? If not, why not? Do you celebrate the holidays together and what are the traditions of your family? 4). To have a good relationship with parents and grandparents, you need to spend more time with them, ask about their hobbies, help them in various matters. Celebrate the holidays with them and give them nice gifts. If you live separately, be constantly interested in their well-being. 5) I believe that family is more important. Work is also important as income, but the family is falsely in the first place. It is very important to maintain good communication with your family.

I like to celebrate holidays like Easter, New Eear, birthdays and Christmas with my family. Шn these moments I feel incredibly happy.
Also we have family album. Many memories and moments, wich are important for my family are collected here.
How many members are in your family?
Do you have sibling/siblings? How many? Вo your parents understand and support you? Do you like to spend time with your family?
First of all I can advise to try to understand the feelings of your parents and show respect to them. And you should help your relatives with household chores.
Of course family is more important than work. But work also matters, because the family needs financial support.

    1. I think that it's really important to celebrate some holidays with your family. And I like to celebrate New Year, Easter, parents' wedding anniversary and our birthdays.
    2. My family, of course, have a family album. Moreover, we have many albums in our family. We keep albums starting from the birth of each family member. And it has not only photos, but some our first words and sizes of feet and palms by years.
    3. Is your family close-knit?
What traditions do you have in your family?
What relations do you have with your family?
What kind of holidays do you like to celebrate in your family?
    4. I think, you can spend more time with your family, listen to their opinion, discuss and solve problems together. It can be difficult at first, but you have to try, and one day you will communicate like friends.
    5. Personally for me, work is more important. However, it depends on each other. When there is support and the family pillar, then everything will be fine both at work and in the family.

    1. In our family we selebrate birthdays, christmas, new year and International Women's day.

    2. When I was younger we kept a huge family album with many paper photos. But now all the modern technologies allow us to store our photographs and other files in phones or computers. So we have a digital family album and it's much cheaper (in comparsion with traditional albums).

    3. Who is your family made of? Do you have siblings or cousins? Are you the oldest, yongest or middle child? Do you get on well with your relatives?

    4. Of course, you need to respect them. Without respect you can't get along with your elder family members. Then try to spend more time with them and communicate. If you want to make your family more united, you can adopt some traditions.

    5. I think family is more important, because they always support you and they will never let you down. Moreover, you can change a job, but you never can change your family, they will be there for you for the rest of your life.
