English Songs

Songs are a great source of ‘real-life’ language and you can use music to practise lots of different language skills. Most of all, songs are a fun way to learn English!

AEF 1 Song "All Over the World"

This song was originally made famous by the English rock group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) in 1980. All Over the World was a hit song in many countries  and it was on the soundtracks of the movies Xanadu in 1980 and the science fiction comedy  Paul in 2011.

AEF 1 Song "Please, Don't Go"

Please Don’t Go was a number 1 hit in the US in 1979 for American group KC and the Sunshine Band. The song was also a hit for three other bands between 1992 and 2008.

AEF 1 Song "Somethin' Stupid" by Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams

Something Stupid was originally a hit for father and daughter duo Frank and Nancy Sinatra in 1967. Nicole Kidman sang the song in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge, and later made a new recording of it with Robbie Williams.

AEF 1 Song "Who Wants to Live Forever?" by Queen

Who Wants to Live Forever? was a hit for British rock group Queen in 1986. The song was also on the soundtrack of the movie Highlander and later the TV series.

Queen was commissioned to write this for the movie Highlander, and Brian May wrote it after watching the first cut of the film. He wrote the line "Who wants to live forever" in a cab on his way home from the viewing of the film. Inspiration came from the scene where Connor Macleod (Christopher Lambert) takes his dying wife Heather (Biettie Edney) in his arms at the time of her death. This is also the scene where the song is played.

In the film, Freddie Mercury sings the first verse, but on the album, Brian May sings the first verse and Freddie sings the rest.

AEF 2 Song "Ugly" by Sugababes 

This song was originally made famous by the Sugababes in 2005. Ugly was a hit single for the Sugababes in many countries in 2005 and 2006. The band recorded the song after negative comments about them in British newspapers. Sugababes used a line from this song as the name of their fourth album, Taller in More Ways.

AEF 2 Song "Blue as your eyes"by Scouting for Girls

This song was originally recorded by the UK band Scouting For Girls. The band’s name comes from the fact that two of them met when they were in The Scouts, a national club where young boys learn things like camping, climbing, and outdoor sports. Blue As Your Eyes is a song from their 2010 album Everybody Wants To Be on TV.

AEF 2 Song "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" by Sting

This song was originally recorded by Sting, the singer and songwriter, who first became famous as part of the group The Police. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free was one of his first hits as a solo artist in 1985.

AEF 4 Song "Unbelievable"

This song was originally recorded by EMF, an alternative dance band from England who became famous at the beginning of the 90s. Their first single “Unbelievable” reached number 3 in the UK singles chart and number 1 in the US.

Song Dreamer by Ozzy Osbourne

"Dreamer" is the third track from Ozzy Osbourne's album Down to Earth, which was released on October 16, 2001. The single peaked at number 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks. The song describes the rockstar's vision of people and humanity destroying Earth. In the liner notes to Osbourne's Prince of Darkness box set, Ozzy refers to this song as his version of John Lennon's "Imagine".
