IELTS Writing Task 1: Line Graph 5

Annual cinema admissions: by age (United Kingdom)

Writing Tip

Introduction should describe the purpose of the report and say what the overall trends are. For example, if the graph is climbing up or dropping down, you should mention the change or the changes accurately and meaningfully. You need to remember that you are describing a graph to someone who does not see it, so your words must draw the picture.

Write what the graph is about, its dates and location as well as the right kind of measurements used. You must write in complete sentences. Notes are not acceptable.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The graph shows annual cinema admissions by age in the UK.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

  1. The chart presents statistics about cinema attendance in the UK using some details such as ages and
the period from 1997 to 2009.

We can notice that number of people aged 45 and over was rose considerably from 19 millions in 1997 to 46 millions in 2008, but after that, the figures fell slightly to 40 million in 2009. We can also mention a similar growth for visitors aged 35-44, whose huge peak of 35 million was at the end of 2001, then the figures were unstable, although there was a significant increase at the end of 2009.By comparison, for those in the 35-44 age group, the overall trend was the only one where we can see sharply decrease between 2004 and 2005.

Finally, if we talk about the group that goes to the cinema much more than others (this is exactly people of age 15-24), their figures were fluctuating, but still had the highest numbers for the entire period from 1997 to 2009. A serious drop in integers was only in early 2004 and amounted to 50 million, after which growth was again noted.

After that, the numbers plummeted again to 55 million and show an upward trend to the 63 million at the end of 2009.

Summing up, all trends are grown dramatically, interest in visiting the cinema increases for all ages, despite the fact that all figures were fluctuating for the whole period.

    2. Good job! The essay has a good structure, all the data is used and all the ideas are fully explained.
Pay attention to your mistakes: 9 million (without -s), if the numbers are in the past, you have to use past tenses.

  2. The line graph illustrates the number of cinema attendance in the United Kingdom ranging from different age groups for a period between 1997 and 2009.
At first glance, it is clear that most moviegoers range from the age of 15-24 with the highest quantity being around 60 millions. While the lowest being the ages of 35-44 with the highest number of 35 millions. That is a massive difference.
From the year 1997 until 2002, the amount of movie attendees from each age group increased slightly. However, in the subsequent years, there was a dramatic decrease in moviegoers for 25-34 and 35-34 age groups. After that there were fluctuations in the range of 10 millions for both of the groups.
Apart from this, it is shown that the ages of 45 and over had a noticeable rise from 20 millions up to almost 47 millions during the period from 1997 to 2008, ending with a decrease to 40 millions in 2009. As regards those aged 15-24, this was the only group that didn’t lost its position and fluctuated on a scale from 50 to 60 millions.
Summing everything up, it is clear that the general trend was upwards even though the fluctuations were noticeable enough.

    1. The report accurately addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the graph and making relevant comparisons. However, some aspects could be more precise and detailed for a higher score. Pay attention to the use of synonyms, and the use of such cardinals as 60 million.
