Exam Topics: Life is short, art is long

Our world has become a very visual one – we have art all around us. Understanding art is understanding our world! A good first step is to try to understand what we mean by art. The arts include visual artsliterary arts and the performing arts, like musictheatre, and film, among others. If you ask people in the street what art is, paintings and statues are common answers. But actually it’s more than that. The types of visual art include architecture, animation, collage, comics, design, drawing, graffiti, illustration, installation art, photography, sculpture and so on.
The first time that the question of what art is came up in the 19th century in an essay by Leo Tolstoy. In his work he argues against numerous theories which define art in terms of the good, truth, and especially beauty. In Tolstoy’s opinion, art at the time was much more than that. According to him, art must create an emotional link between artist and audience, one that “infects” the viewer. Some researchers believe that art is actually about communicating the feelings of the artists.
But of course there are people who view the art as a commercial idea. As Frank Zappa once said, “Art is making something out of nothing and selling it.”
For someone art can be therapy. There is even a term “art therapy”. The aim of art therapy is to improve or maintain mental health and emotional well-being. In my opinion art plays a large part in making our lives infinitely rich. Art stimulates different parts of our brains to make us laugh or cry, calm down or start shouting. You could say “Art is something that makes us more thoughtful and well-balanced humans.”
Art is form and content. Form means the elements of art, the principles of design and the actual, physical materials that the artist has used. Content is idea-based and means what the artist meant to say, what the artist actually did say and how we react, as individuals, to the author’s messages.
The world of art is really fascinating. It is the world of fine artists and sculptors, art historians and critic curators, designers and photographers. We can enjoy masterpieces of both old and modern art in such world famous museums as the Louvre (Paris), the British Museum and the National Gallery (London), the State Hermitage (St. Petersburgh), the Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the Prado Museum (Madrid) and many others.
A lot of young people enjoy graffiti – the so called street art, though some older people consider it to be illegal and ugly. I think we have to accept it as part of our lives. A lot of companies use graffiti imagery to promote their things.
The most frequent association with the word art is painting. Painting has had a long and glorious world history as an independent art.
Belarusian artists have made an enormous contribution to the development of world culture. In the 12-18th centuries the most popular genres of fine arts in Belarus were frescos, icon and portrait painting. The 16th century portraits created in Belarus were influenced by the Italian and German Renaissance. Ivan Chrutsky (1810-1885) is considered to be the greatest figure in Belarusian art of the 19th century. His sentimental portraits and luminous (светящиеся) still-life paintings had been assiduously (усердно) collected by Russian and Polish art galleries.
An important role in the formation of young artists in Belarus was played by the opening of art schools in Vitebsk (1898) and Minsk (1906). Among the various genres of Belarusian fine arts water-colour painting is of undoubting importance and interest. Here we should mention V. Tsvirko, one of the leading Belarusian artists. His water-colours Willows Have Burst into Blossom, The Melted Snow and April are superb.
The most famous Belarusian artists who painted in oils are M. Savitski, E. Zaitsev and I. Akhremchik. The war theme predominates in their pictures, though, of course, they also painted landscapes and portraits. The series Figures on the Heart by M. Savitski has become a specific phenomenon in Belarusian art.
At the beginning of the 20th century a new trend of abstract painting developed in Vitebsk. Among the artists who belonged to that trend were the world famous M. Chagal, K. Malevich, G. Pen and others. Some of them had to leave Belarus and live abroad.
Here I would like to insert some words about abstract art. Understanding abstract art does not come naturally for everyone but it can’t leave people indifferent. To understand abstract art you have to open up your intuition and see where the painting takes you.  Abstract art allows the viewer to decide what the artwork is about, on a very personal level. It requires an open mind and a big imagination. What people don’t realize is that the best abstract artists have excellent drawing skills, a fine sense of composition, and a deep understanding of the workings of color. Instead they choose to express their emotions by creating a piece that is more free, free of the weight of objects. If you want to fully understand an artwork, it’s important to know the artist’s intention behind it. Knowing the artist’s thought process for creating a certain work of art adds to the meaning and value of a painting.
Pablo Picasso once said: “Everyone wants to understand art. Why not try to understand the song of a bird?” Picasso has a point. Art can’t be explained in words, because its influence on people is very personal.
Art echoes the natural world. Art is a means of communion as well as communication. Art creates awareness of social issues. Art may express and reflect the religious, political, and economical aspects of cultures. Art is and can be what ever a culture says it is or what ever they want it to be. Art also helps us to express our sentimental relations. It can beautify, surprise, inspire, stimulate imagination, inform, tell stories, and record history. As someone once said, “Art is life.”

Let’s talk about art.

1. Tell me what forms of art you enjoy most.

2. Is graffiti a form of art or an act of vandalism?

3. Ask me questions about the comedy I have lately seen.

4. Give me a piece of advice on what architectural monuments are worth visiting in Belarus.

5. Are you interested in videoblogs? Why or why not?

Write the answers to the questions in comments.

    1. I am a big fan of pictures that people and even animals draw. It is incredibly interesting, especially to reflect on the meaning of the pictures, to think what was in the soul of the writer of this picture. I also love theater very much, as it is an undeniable transfer of feelings. It is very difficult, but interesting. Art is considered both the design of things and film acting. This is all insanely fascinating and makes you think.
    2. It is necessary to consider this issue from both sides. It is undoubtedly an art when decorating boring places of cities. However, if this is a mark of urban "groups", I believe it is vandalism. Or when landmarks or world heritage are painted over, it is vandalism.
    3. 1. What moment brought you to brighter emotions?
    2. What was the essence of the comedy?
    3. What was the meaning of it?
    4. Have you seen similar comedies to this one?
    4. I believe that you must visit the Mir Castle, the Palace of the Radziwills, which are world heritage. Of course, it's hard not to mention the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Ruzhany Castle. You also need to visit Khatyn and the Augustow Canal.
    5. Of course, I'm interested in video blogs. You do not always have the opportunity to visit any places, so you can observe it from the outside, watching another person's video blog. The program "Heads and Tails" can serve as an example of this, in which various information about countries is presented in a very interconnected manner.

  2. 1)Each type of art opens endless worlds of fantasy, full of bright colors and impressions. I like everything that evokes positive emotions: literature, music, fine arts and other types of art.
2)Graffiti can be vandalism and art too. Whether it is vandalism or not depends only on where and for what purpose it was created.
3)What funny moments do you remember? What is this comedy about? Which character do you like best? What were your impressions after watching this comedy?
4)I would recommend visiting the Mir Castle (the most popular attraction of Belarus, the residence of the famous Radziwill family), St. Sophia Cathedral (one of the earliest churches in Europe and the first stone one in Belarus), the Observation Tower in Gomel (one of the most mysterious architectural structures. , under the hill on which this mysterious tower rises, they found dungeons)
5)Yes, in particular I like to watch video blogs about travel, so I can learn a lot about the countries where I have not been, understand which countries I would like to visit. I also like to watch entertaining video blogs that cheer me up. Sometimes I watch video blogs on an educational topic.

  3. 1. Art is a great power. The arts include visual arts, literary arts and the performing arts, like music, theatre, and film, among others.
Today music and films are the most available forms of art. As for me, I enjoy music. Music has a great impact on our mood. As any other form of art, music reflects life, people’s ideas and emotions. I'd really like to visit art galleries and theaters more often to make my life infinitely rich.

    2. Graffiti has both positive and negative sides.
It is a form of art when people decorate dark and boring buildings or even parts of a town with interesting and attractive paintings. By the way, such companies as “Coca Cola” and “McDonald’s” use graffiti to promote their products. But graffiti can be presented as ugly signs and filthy language. In this way it is an act of vandalism.

    3. What was the comedy about? Did you like it?
Would you recommend me to see it?
Would you like to see it again?
    Where did you see it?

    4. The Brest Fortress is one of the must-see places in Belarus and the largest tourist attraction in Brest. Belarus is a country of castles. I can advise to visit the Mir Castle complex (Mirsky zamok). It is an outstanding example of 16th-century fortification art. Nesvizh Palace is also one of worth-visiting Belarusian architectural monuments.

    5. Many people like making videos on interesting topics based on their opinions and points of views or just recording their daily life. Yes, I'm interested in videoblogs but only in watching them. Travel blogs are the most popular ones and I also like them. This is the way we can broaden our outlook and get knowledge about different parts of the world staying at home.

  4. 1) I like painting the most. To be more specific, my favorite painter is Aivazovsky. I really love to look at paintings depicting the sea.
    2) I can't really pick one side of this thread. For me, if graffiti is beautiful and aesthetic, I will admire it. But if these are offensive words, incorrect drawings are vandalism.
    3) 1) Did you like the plot? 2) What would you like to change in the plot? 3) Would you watch this comedy again? 4) Have you ever wanted to do a comedy?
    4) I think that the most beautiful and interesting are Mir and Nesvezhsky castle. They have a very fascinating history. I would also visit Polotsk. There are many unusual monuments of Belarus there. For example, the center of Europe, the monument to ў.
    5) Yes, they are. I watch video blogs on various topics. When I'm not in the mood or very tired, I watch entertainment channels. If I am in the mood for something more serious, I can look at interesting facts or disclosures, for example, of beauty brands. I think that this way the new information is perceived better, at least for me.

  5. 1)Of course, most of all I like music. However, I admire some paintings or statues. Also tattoos, if you can call it art.
2)I believe that graffiti is definitely an art. Wherever a picture or just a drawing is drawn, it is still a drawing. And drawing is an art. Graffiti is called vandalism, because often people draw bad things or inscriptions on the walls.
3)1. Did you laugh while watching it?
    2. Would you recommend this comedy to me?
    3. Who is the director of this comedy?
    4. What did you like/dislike about this comedy?
4)I would recommend visiting the Eternal Flame in Minsk first of all. I also visited the Brest Fortress and I advise you to visit it too. Of course, it is worth visiting Mirsky and Nesvizh Castle.
5)Not that I'm interested, but I watch a few video bloggers and I understand that making videos is not always as easy as it seems at first glance. I would make a video myself, but I'm probably too lazy:)

    1. There are many types of art. Personally, I enjoy music. Music has been close to humanity throughout our history. There are many genres and everyone can find their own. It can affect a person. Music makes people energetic and active. I do music myself and it helps me express my thoughts and emotions.
    2. I believe that graffiti is a form of art. It is a symbol of rebellion and a completely new form of creativity. I believe that this can be called art, because graffiti reflects thoughts and emotions. Every graffiti has a meaning. But sometimes teenagers paint completely ugly and offensive graffiti on government buildings. In this case, it is vandalism.
    3. What was the comedy about?
Would you like to watch this film again?
What funny moments did you remember?
    Where did you watch it?
    4. I advise you to visit Mir Castle and Nesvizh Castle. These incredible castle complexes will take you into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. Various excursions and events, such as knight fights, are held here. I also advise you to visit the Brest Fortress memorial complex. Here you will learn about the exploits of our soldiers during the Second World War.
    5. I sometimes watch videoblogs. I watch travel-related blogs because I'm interested in learning about the culture and traditions of other countries. It's also interesting to watch videoblogs of foreigners who come to Belarus and share their impressions. I think it's more interesting to watch video blogs than TV programs, because videoblogs have real emotions.

  7. 2. Is graffiti a form of art or an act of vandalism?

    3. Ask me questions about the comedy I have lately seen.

    4. Give me a piece of advice on what architectural monuments are worth visiting in Belarus.

    5. Are you interested in videoblogs? Why or why not?

    1. As for me i do enjoy music and i can't live with it. Music helps me to study hard or relax by creating the perfect atmosphere. Also the music reflects much more nerve cells than art or sculpture.

    2. I'm in two minds as there are some beautiful and eye-attracting while tagging is really disfigures the image of a city.

    3. Was it an old and classical one?
    Did u like it?
What was the most hilarious moment?
Are there any stars filmed in this comedy?
    4. I advise you to visit old cities as Polotsk, Gomel and others to meet Belarusian architecture which survived after the war catastrophes.

    5. I'm not a huge fan but if the blog is useful or at least is well-done there is a chance that i'll watch it.

    1. Can't you live with music or without? Well-done, the only thing: I wish your answers were more extended. You have got a nine.

  8. 1. I really enjoy visual art like Renaissance works. The artists of that time could create something out of nothing. These awesome colours, these details traced to the smallest things and models are the like a breath of the past, the part of something unreal and unique

    2. Graffiti is a great way to express your thoughts. It can be a form of art and an act of vandalism at the same time. Some people draw something really breathtaking and make the walls of buildings not so boring as usual, but there are a lot of people who draw something awful and obscene.

    3. What is the name of comedy that you have lately seen?
    Did you like it?
    Where did you watch it?
Was it old comedy or new one?
At what moment did you laugh more?

    4. First of all it is well-known Mir and Nesvizh castles. They are famous for their good looks and great historical heritage. They are ones of the few castles which were reconstructed by our government more closely to their original appearance. WE had a lot of castles in the middle age but they all were destroyed in the wars. We can see only the ruins of them and I can’t say that the a pile of bricks is something that you must see or visit. Also I can name Palace of the Rumyantsevs and Paskevichs in Gomel. Huge castle with enormous area around it looks really aesthetic.

    5. I’m not a video blogger but I can watch some blogs especially when they are telling us about trips to different countries. It is always interesting to know how people live in foreign countries, what they prefer to eat and how they like to rest in their free time in more informal video with true opinion of the person.

  9. 1. There are a lot of forms of art, but I especially enjoy music and visual arts, like paintings and films/videos. Literature and architecture are also interesting in their manifestation, so I am intrested in their exploration. I want to try myself in different types of art in the future.

    2. It depends on situation. Graffiti can be truly impressive and beautiful, but only if they are made in the places intended for this. Of course, tags and rude words aren't art.

    3. What are your impressions of the comedy?
Do you like this film genre?
What other films of this director have you watched?
    What was the funniest moment?

    4. The cities of Grodno and Brest are worth visiting. There are a lot of architectural monuments, which you should see. Usually the city centers are always full of pretty old buildings with different museums and atmospheric cafes. Minsk is the capital of our country, so I think you will visit it without my advice, but if not, I recommend it too.

    5. Sometimes I watch some videoblogs and even follow several videobloggers. But I'm not very passionate about it, I watch it just to entertain myself, when I have nothing to do, or turn it on in the background, to make routine not so boring. Most of all I like travel bloggers and videogames streamers.

  10. 1.Most of all i prefer music. Music is my main hobby. I dont like other types of art like painting, architecture and others. So, maybe in future i will become famous musician.
2.I think it can be on both sides. If you painted picture of city for example, i will say that it art. But if you painted advertise of some shop, it will be act of vandalism. But all people have their own opinion of this situation. For someone all graffiti will be act of vandalism.
3.1)Where have you seen this comedy?
2)Is this comedy only for adults or children can watch it too?
    3)Do you like it?
4)Where does this comedy take place?
    5)How long is this comedy?
4.Nowadays you can visit such places like Mir castle, Nesvizh castle. Also Brest fortress.
And the first place that you will visit will be our capital-Minsk. There you can see places like Holy Spirit Cathedral and the Red Church, Troitskoye Suburb and the Church of Piotr and Pavel.
5.Video blogs are not intersting for me. I dont see sense of seeing someone's life. If we talking about blogs where people show other countries. It not intersting for in the third degree. If i will know everything about this places, then there's no need for me to visit it.

  11. 1. Contemporary art also offers a mix of different genres. As for me I'm a huge fan of music and dance. Also I'm interested in literature, fine arts, and movies. E ach of them has a rich variety, so it's impossible not to find something that you will like.
Graffiti can be vandalism. And art, too. Whether it is vandalism or not depends only on where and for what purpose it was created. I believe that in the era of postmodernism art can be anything.
    3.
    Did you like it?
What do you think are the funniest moments?
What were your impressions after watching?
Would you recommend me to watch it?
    Were famous actors filmed there?
There are many such monuments in Belarus. Those that must be visited are the Bresika Fortress, the Mir and Lida castles, the Nesvizh Palace and Park Complex, the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Spaso-Euphrosyne Church. Their stories will not leave you indifferent.
I find videoblogs very convenient and interesting. I watch them quite often. You can find videos on absolutely any topic. Videoblogs also reflect our interests and help us find people with whom we share our point of view. From some videos we can learn more about the places where we would like to visit.
